Day 21: Liberal to Dodge City KS

Well, we made it to the (in)famous town of the old west, Dodge City. Did you know that it was once called Buffalo City because it seemed to be the center of the buffalo massacre and trade in the 1870s or so.

This is a mock up of what it looked like.

Anyway, I think today was one of the most enjoyable rides thus far. The ride was 83.7 miles so it wasn't too far although the first 61 miles was run ENE with a strong gusting South wind. We averaged only 15.1 mph for that first 61 miles but course the last 23 was due north and we averaged 22.7 mph for that leg. Really fun going that fast and not working too hard. Overall average was 16.0

The day broke to overcast skies, cool temps in the low 50s, winds out of the south at 10-15 with 40% chance of afternoon thunderstorms. The riders really didn't know how to dress but most were in windbreakers but no rain gear. Fortunately we saw no rain today.

These pictures don't do the scene justice, but now I really get the phrase, 'Amber waves of grain...'

Wheat to the left......
Wheat to the right.....
With the wind blowing so strong, it was easy to see the 'waves of wind' imparted on the flowing tops of the wheat crop. Fantastic sight!!!

Now, can anyone explain the following power wire arrangement?  I hope this was a temporary state of upgrade or repair. It really looked strange....

Power wires, Kansas style......

I couldn't help but stop and listen to the putter-putter-putter sound of this water pump. No one in a passing car even knew it was there. I took a video also so you can hear but its too large to upload today.

This scene impressed me also... the windmill, pump and watering trough being taken full advantage of by the local residents.

Tomorrow 85 miles to Great Bend, KS. Take Care!!

Is that where the phrase "getting out of Dodge" came from?
